  • What is the diagnosis?

Stage 3 mesothelioma is a clearly advanced stage of mesothelioma, with the cancer having exhibited clear metastasis to surrounding tissues and organs while still localized on one side of the chest cavity. At this stage, the cancer has also spread to the lymph nodes. The utilization of surgery as stage 3 mesothelioma treatment is not always appropriate. However, for patients in otherwise good health, curative surgery can be the most appropriate first treatment option. Otherwise, focus is usually transferred to palliative care to keep the patient comfortable and pain-free.

By the time mesothelioma cancer is diagnosed as stage 3, it has already or has potential to spread into other areas of the body including:

  • Tissues between ribs and chest cavity wall
  • Between the lungs (in the mediastinal fat)
  • Within the chest wall
  • The pericardial sac
  • The lining of the diaphragm and within the diaphragm itself
  • The lining of the lung and within the lung itself
  • The lining of the chest cavity between the lungs
