  • What is the diagnosis?

Treating mesothelioma depends upon the disease stage, the location of tumors, the patient's age, history and health at the time of diagnosis, and many other factors. The most common and conventional types of treatment are:

Surgery

Surgery is the oldest method of treating cancer. In some cases, it may be the only treatment necessary. This
is especially true if mesothelioma or other cancer is in its early stages.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses special machines to generate and direct high-energy particles to specific places in the body. These particles penetrate body tissues and are aimed directly at the tumor to damage and destroy cancer cells.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy or “chemo” refers to any drug or combination of drugs that kills, slows down, or damages
cancer cells.

These treatments may be used alone or in combination depending on the type of mesothelioma, stage, where the tumor is located, age and health of the patient, and other factors. These treatment options can be used as a curative treatment or palliative treatment depending on the stage of the cancer. If any of these treatments are used together, it is called multimodal therapy.
